Le projet
Spotlight Québec est le fruit de la rencontre entre deux organismes québécois, Folquébec et la Société pour la promotion de la danse traditionnelle québécoise (SPDTQ), un organisme britannique, Showcase Scotland, ainsi que la Délégation Générale du Québec à Londres. Les missions communes de Folquébec et de la SPDTQ sont de promouvoir et de diffuser les musiques folk et traditionnelles faites au Québec. Ces deux organismes collaborent à la promotion des groupes de musique traditionnelle québécoise sur le marché britannique, et par effet d’entraînement, sur le marché international.
Un projet dont la réalisation s’étend sur trois ans, (2008 à 2010), SPOTLIGHT QUÉBEC se situe en continuité avec des actions entreprises sur le terrain par divers intervenants du secteur au fil de plusieurs rencontres lors des foires nationales et internationales – la conférence annuelle du Conseil des festivals folk de l’Ontario (OCFF); WOMEX à Séville; Folk Alliance à Memphis, Tennessee (É.-U.); Strictly Mundial, et finalement le Showcase Scotland à Glasgow, Écosse. SPOTLIGHT QUÉBEC réponde à une demande d’échanges commerciaux accru entre le Québec et le Royaume Uni en matière de produits culturels de musique traditionnelle.
La musique
La musique traditionnelle n’a jamais été aussi vivante! La nouvelle compilation de Folquébec, outil promotionnel pour le projet Spotlight Québec, en est la preuve, puisqu’elle réunit une trentaine de ses plus fiers représentants. Tous ces artistes du Québec ont en commun la passion de leur héritage culturel, source à laquelle ils puisent leur inspiration. Chacun réinvente aussi à sa façon ce patrimoine musical déjà riche de ses diverses origines.
Les artistes de cette compilation nous parlent de transmission, et pour certains, c’est même une histoire de famille (Duo Lemieux, Dentdelion…). Au fil de l’écoute, la jeune génération (Le Vent du Nord, Genticorum, Les Chauffeurs à Pieds, l’Anche a deux cordes…) côtoie les plus anciens (Les Mononcles), ceux qui ont participé depuis plusieurs décennies au renouveau du genre, et à sa popularité à travers le monde. Instrumentale (Alain Lamontagne, Laura Risk, Raz-de-Marée,…) ou chantée (La Part du Quêteux, Hurlevent), cette musique invite à la danse, appelle à la fête, raconte des histoires, au son du violon ou au rythme des pieds qui battent la mesure, comme au temps des veillées. Cet album montre avant tout que les chemins de la réinvention sont infinis, à l’image du répertoire : voix de femmes (Galant Tu Perds Ton Temps, Serre L’Ecoute, Les Langues Fourchues), touche électro (Duo Bouthillier-Elmaleh, Michel Faubert), accent manouche (L’Anche à Deux Cordes) ou rock (Mauvais Sort), même du «old-time» (Madame S’Amuse). Qualité artistique, créativité, passion, transmission : la musique traditionnelle a de beaux jours devant elle.
The project
Spotlight Québec features a collaboration between Folquébec, an internationally focused marketing coalition and the SPDTQ (Société pour la promotion de la danse traditionnelle québécoise), local keeper of the flame, to promote traditional Québécois music to our close cousins via a UK partnership with Showcase Scotland. The initiative is supported by the Québec General Delegation in London.
The common missions of Folquébec and the SPDTQ are to promote and present folk, world and traditional music created in Québec. The organizations are collaborating to increase the presence of Québec artists in the UK market, and by extension, to the international network of festivals and events represented yearly at Showcase Scotland. Designed to get results over a three-year period (2008-2010), Spotlight Québec will help to put the focus on this music, which continues to find new international partners every year by highlighting the important players and the noteworthy up-and-comers who are ready to enter the international market. The partnership project will also help to nurture a growing demand for cultural exchanges with the UK.
The music
Québec trad music is in full expansion, and it has never been as evident as with the new 30-artist compilation produced by Folquébec as a key marketing tool for Spotlight Québec. The double-disc compilation features some of the best Québécois trad (« world » music for those of you outside of the province) artists active in the genre today, all of whom share a passion for the rich heritage and culture as a never-ending inspirational source. Each also contributes, in hers/his own way, to the re-invention of the genre, bringing to the table a variety of colours to enrich their music with contemporary or other sounds… the possibilities are endless, and voilà! – new sources are born.
The artists of the compilation are hyper-conscious of the transmission process and refer to it religiously in both their physical makeup and on their recordings. Whether they are : a family band (Serre L’Ecoute, Duo Lemieux, Dentdelion); the up-and-coming generation, (Le Vent du Nord, Genticorum, Les Chauffeurs à Pieds, l’Anche a deux cordes) or seasoned veterans (Les Mononcles, Yves Lambert, La Bottine Souriante); demonstrating instrumental prowess Alain Lamontagne, Réveillons!, Laura Risk, Raz-de-Marée) or vocal subtlety (La Part du Quêteux, Matapat, Hurlevent); providing a feminine point of view (Galant Tu Perds Ton Temps, Les Langues Fourchues); demonstrating cultural-instrumental diversity via electronica or sampling (Duo Bouthillier-Elmaleh, Michel Faubert); socking it to us with grunge or rock panache (Mauvais Sort, Les Batinses); keeping it real, with nostalgic, jazzy overtones (Les Mononcles, Mademoiselle s’amuse); this is music that invites you to be part of a soirée from another era that is – happily – a growing part of this one! Above all, it’s real, and it all swings to beat the band! One thing is sure : this music continues to thrive and to reach a growing cadre of enthusiasts worldwide.
